Before We Were Horsemen is a documentary film that follows Lakota youth, elders, and spiritual leaders as they circumambulate sacred sites – including Bear Butte, Wounded Knee, Fort Robinson, and Devil’s Tower – in and around the Black Hills of South Dakota during their annual 500-Mile Sacred Hoop Run. Before We Were Horsemen provides viewers with an intimate cinematographic experience of Lakota spirituality, humor, and resiliency and features award-winning Lakota author Joseph P. Marshall III as narrator.
